Xenical: One of a KindWho does not want to be slim and well-shaped? Millions of overweight and obese people all around the world spend so much time, strength and effort to get a wonderful body and match the ideal of beauty. Moreover, they spend their money to achieve the goal: only Americans pay between $30-50 billion each year for the weight loss programs, products and pills. The latter often seem to be an easy and straight way to the place of destination. Is that true? Buying weight loss pills nowadays we can choose between appetite suppressants and lipase inhibitors. All of them are prescription FDA-approved medications. The drugs of the first class work in the brain, increasing the level of the particular chemicals that reduce appetite. Some of the brand names are: Meridia (sibutramine), Didrex, Tenuate, Bontril (phendimetrazine tartrate), etc. The choice of the lipase inhibitors is limited for the time being, since the only available medication of the kind is Xenical. It is a unique drug, which, unlike appetite suppressants, works in the gut. It was approved by Food and Drug Administration at the end of the previous Millennium, in 1999, maintaining the tradition of inventing radically new medications on the edge of the centuries. As we know, fats are responsible for the weight gain. In order to be digested in the human organism they must be broken down into the simplest components. Enzymes in the digestive system, called lipases, carry out the process of breaking down the fats. Xenical’s active ingredient - orlistat - blocks the work of those lipases, thus preventing the digestion of up to one-third consumed fat. Undigested, it is naturally eliminated from the body. The use of appetite suppressants is restricted to several weeks only, while Xenical can be taken for longer periods of time (up to 2 years). The dosage of appetite suppressants depends on the kind of the active component as well as on the patient’s degree of overweight or obesity and health. Xenical is also prescribed individually, though the usual dose should not exceed 120mg three times a day. Be sure to take multivitamin supplement that contains vitamins D, E, K and beta carotene, since Xenical does not allow their absorption from fats. If you miss the meal or the food you consume contains no fat, you may also skip the usage of Xenical. The side effects caused by this pill are rarely serious, though quite unpleasant: •stomach discomfort; •increased number of bowel movements; •loss of control of bowel movements; •urgent need to go to the bathroom; •gas with release of stool; •oily/fatty stools; •oily discharge; •clear, orange or brown colored bowel movements. Serious problems are rare, though it is necessary to know about them: •arthritis or joint pain/tenderness; •back pain; •rash, itching, or shortness of breath; •severe stomach pain; •yellow color appearing in your skin or the whites of your eyes; •weakness or fainting. Compare the above mentioned with the side effects appetite suppressants produce: - addiction; - high blood pressure; - heart and lung problems. Rare: - depression; - fainting; - skin rash; - hallucinations. Symptoms of Xenical overdose are not known. The most important thing about the weight loss pills is that they do not perform miracles. It is not enough to take them to become slender and to feel better. To lose weight a person must keep to a healthy diet and exercise along with medications treatment. Therefore, the life-style is the key to health and beauty. The saying “Everyone is the master of his life” is proved in this situation once more.
