Viagra Saves Men and Sea Horses as wellOctober 2005 - University of New South Wales - Viagra is a remarkable pill not only for its ability to effectively restore men’s sexual performance, but also for its potential in saving lives of many animals, used widely in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat male erectile dysfunction (ED). Such rather unexpected but interesting news came from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Bill von Hippel, associate Professor, initiated the survey, focused on tendencies in TCM after Viagra appearance on the market. Traditional Chinese medicine during many years developed and offered its own remedies to treat impotence in men. These remedies are mostly based on body parts usage of certain animals: sea horses, sea cucumbers, pipe fishes, green turtles, deer and tigers. Taking into account the growing demand of ED treatment options and conservatism of Asian people, preferring traditional medicine to Western pills, the existence of such animals were threatened greatly. After presentation of Viagra in 1998, professor von Hippel suggested that it could become a new hope for many endangered species, used formerly in preparation of ED remedies in China, Thailand, India etc. The latest research proved this idea, demonstrating the tendency, when Chinese men are more likely to use Viagra than TCM to treat impotence. Researchers explain such tendency with the fact that Viagra has a quick and visible effect on patients, so that they can evaluate its efficiency by themselves and practically in few minutes after taking the pill. After Viagra invention, the interest to animal-based remedies as well as hunting for that species decreased, thus giving a new opportunity for endangered animals to restore their population. It is interesting to note, that the survey shows that the popularity of TCM in treating other diseases, like arthritis, indigestion and gout has not changed – Chinese people still prefer traditional remedies to those, offered by Western pharmacists. The said research was funded by Pfizer Inc, the developer of Viagra. Nick External resources http://www.unsw.edu.au/ http://www.psy.unsw.edu.au/Users/BHippel/
