Viagra: the BreakthroughErectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is a medical condition in men, characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain a sustained erection to fulfill a sexual intercourse. ED is not something new, it is an old story. It has been known to humans for ages. This disease tortures and always did millions of men worldwide. In all the times people tried to overwhelm this problem with the help of multiple methods available in every particular historical period, starting with herbal remedies, meditation and yoga and finishing with surgical operations, when special implantants were inserted into the man’s penis.
Initially, the pill was developed for treating cardiovascular diseases, but multiple studies showed that it amazingly possessed the ability to produce erection in men. As a result, sildenafil (a chemical name for Viagra) subdued the world, having turned into the magic pill, which could at last make the suffering men’s dreams about normal sexual life true. The popularity of Viagra grew incredibly in spite of the fact that the pill did not actually cured ED, but simply provoked an erection, while increasing the blood inflow to the penis during the sexual stimulation. Viagra acts best when taken an hour before sexual activity and remains effective for 4 hours. The usual dose is 100 mg., which is more than with the other oral pills (for example, Levitra), which were developed later and became Viagra’s competitors. 82% of all the patients reported about the positive results after taking the drug. For the first time in history such a great number of men suffering from ED got a chance to live a full life and feel the pleasure of intimacy. Sad but true that not all the people respond to medications properly. Sometimes a large number of patients suffer from multiple side effects drugs produce in the organism. Those, who take Viagra, may face the same problem as well, experiencing headache, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, visual disorder and very seldom priapism (a dangerously long-lasting erection). At the same time, these side effects are not that scary, except for the last one, which needs qualified help. The rest of the unpleasant feelings usually pass away in some time. (By the way, even herbal remedies, used before, had many side effects, like allergy or nausea.) The number of men, who stopped taking Viagra because of the side effects, is miniscule in comparison to the other methods: less than 1%. Besides, the pioneers are allowed to have week-points. The one of Viagra is that the drug should not be taken with foods and drinks, since they decrease the pill’s effectiveness. Therefore, it is better to plan a romantic dinner with candles some time before or after the intimacy. To sum it all up, I would say that Viagra was a start, and a good one. It gave a push to researchers and scientists, who now have a firm basement for the new inventions and further development of medical issues concerning ED.
