Palatin’s PT-141 May Soon Become a Serious Rival to ViagraSeptember 27, 2005 - Palatin Technologies, Inc - According to the official press-release, a fundamentally new remedy will soon appear to break the monopoly of Viagra and Viagra-like products on the market of impotence drugs. Palatin Technologies, a biopharmaceutical company, announced recently the receipt of $10 million from King Pharmaceuticals in frames of the collaboration agreement to jointly develop and market new remedy, known as PT-141. The received sum of money will give an additional push to further development and studies of a new drug. Stephen T. Wills, a Palatin's Chief Financial Officer commented the transaction in the official press-release: "We are very pleased with our relationship with King and the progress of the PT-141 program. With ongoing Phase 2 trials in both male and female sexual dysfunction patients, the commercial development program is in full swing and we look forward to the successful and continued advancement of the program towards Phase 3 pivotal trials." PT-141 is a new generation of therapies, called melanocortin agonists, to treat male erectile dysfunction (ED) and female sexual dysfunction (FSD). PT-141 has basically different principle of acting in comparison to presently available oral pills: Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. The said pills, belonging to PDE-5 inhibitors, help men restore penile erection by improving the blood inflow to the penis, thus affecting mainly the vascular system of men, while the developers of PT-141 says that their creation involves the processes in central nervous system rather than a vascular to initiate and maintain the erection in men and sexual arousal in women. Interesting to note that PT-141, unlike Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, has no contraindications for its co-usage with nitrates, a group of medications, used to treat certain cardio-vascular diseases. Another promising perspective of PT-141 is its focusing on solving female sexual problems alongside with those of men, for example, decreased libido or sex desire, arousal, painful intercourse and inability to achieve orgasm. Scientists expect PT-141 to become first “Viagra” for women. For the time being PT-141 exists in the form of nasal spray and passes all the necessary clinic and at-home trials. The final Phase 3 of trials is planned for year 2006. So it takes time for new drug to get the approval of FDA and appear in the pharmacies. Meanwhile, the best available options to treat male erectile dysfunction still are Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
