Propecia: Performing Miracles …It is a women’s prerogative to be obsessed with the looks: the size of the breasts, the slimness and suppleness of the waist, etc. On the other hand, men allow themselves having at least one weak point about the appearance – it is their hair. In spite of all the efforts to convince men that baldness does not really spoil them – in fact, it sometimes makes them more attractive – the stronger sex considers hair loss a whip and try to escape it all the possible ways. The end of the second Millennium was quite successful for the scientists searching the solving of one of the men’s problems: in 1997 FDA approved Propecia - the first pill to treat male pattern baldness on the top and mid areas of the head, and in 1998 - Rogaine (hair growth stimulant in the form of liquid). Propecia (finasteride) is manufactured by Merck and Company, Inc. These pills work on the hormonal level, blocking the enzyme 5 alpha reductase - the cause of baldness. The other hormones are not affected. Therefore, Propecia treats baldness, while hair growth stimulants only revitalize follicles without fighting the actual reason of the disease. Baldness is believed to run in families. Therefore, the vast majority of men are genetically predisposed to the disease. To escape it, they will have to take Propecia all the time. If they cut the treatment off, hair loss will be back – genes will predominate again. The drug under revision seems to be a miracle due to the small number of men having side effects, while undergoing treatment with Propecia: 98% of patients report of no side effects at all, while the effectiveness leaves no space for doubts! Nevertheless, 2% left cannot be missed. The side effects they experience are quite serious: decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased volume of ejaculated sperm and breast tenderness or enlargement. It is an interesting fact that these problems tend to vanish if a person is treated more than 5 years, and only 0.3% of patients still have them. The reports of the overdose by Propecia, as well as by the hair growth stimulants, were not found. Still, difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue or face and hives are the signs of an allergic reaction and medical help may be needed. Unlike Rogain, Propecia must not be taken by women, since it was developed for men only and can have devastating results on women’s health. The male babies of pregnant women can suffer birth defects of the reproductive organs under the influence of the pill. Thus, the warning mentioned must be strictly held to. Originally developed to treat an enlarged prostate, Propecia now returns men their hair, self-esteem and consequently fights depression in bald men (the stronger sex is so weak psychologically!), thus serving several purposes at once, giving men a better life.
