Levitra Is As Good As ViagraSeptember 25, 2006 - Journal of Sexual Medicine – “Levitra is as good as Viagra” say the results, obtained within the new medical research, described in the recent issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine and also presented at the 12th World Congress of the International Society for Sexual Medicine in Cairo, Egypt. For the time being, the market of oral medications for treating erectile dysfunction is presented by three products - Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. All of them belong to the same family of PDE-5 inhibitors; thus, their effectiveness and safety profiles are very similar, which makes it very difficult not only for patients, but for medical specialists as well, to decide what pill is the best. Comparing sildenafil (Viagra) and vardenafil (Levitra) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men with diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia was the major goal of the CONFIRMED Study (COmparing vardeNafil and sildenaFil In the tReatment of Men with Erectile Dysfunction (ED)). The study was randomized, double-blind and pooled crossover to provide the most unbiased results possible. In general, 1057 men participated in the study. All of them were given Levitra 20 mg for one month period and Viagra 100 mg for the other one month. Neither patients nor doctors knew about the actual pill, used for every phase of the study. All the patients were screened with the specialized questionnaires to find out their preferences as for the treatment options. The final results of the research showed that 38.9% of men expressed an overall preference for Levitra over Viagra; the latter was preferred by 34.5% of participants. At the same time 26.6% of patients had no treatment preference. Scientists say that the difference in figures is not statistically significant, but it proves the non-inferiority of Levitra. That means that Levitra is at least as good as Viagra in treating erectile dysfunction. In some aspects, such as intercourse and overall satisfaction, hardness and maintenance of erection, Levitra showed even better results in comparison to Viagra. Moreover, patients preferred Levitra for its ability to help them maintain erection until the completion of intercourse. "This study represents an important step forward in our understanding of the clinical differences between PDE5 inhibitors, confirming the efficacy of vardenafil for men with erectile dysfunction," explains Irwin Goldstein, study co-author and Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine. Thus, the results of the study added some more points to Levitra as the medication to consider while choosing the treatment option against erectile dysfunction. Since the research was designed to eliminate any bias towards either Viagra or Levitra, the results are expected to be accepted by the medical community with confidence and trust.
