Levitra Helps Men with High CholesterolDecember 10, 2007 - Schering-Plough – The first study specifically designed to evaluate the effectiveness of Levitra in men, suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED) and dyslipidemia, showed that Levitra can significantly improve the ability of men with dyslipidemia, including high cholesterol levels, to achieve and maintain erection for successful sexual intercourse. Commenting the results of the study, Dr. Martin Miner, Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Brown University's Warren Alpert School of Medicine said: "This study provides further support that Levitra can successfully treat ED, even in men with a serious common condition like high cholesterol." According to the statistics, about 30 million of men in the USA suffer from erectile dysfunction, and up to70 % of them also have such disorders, as high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes and high blood pressure. All of those illnesses may contribute to the development of ED, thus it is important for ED medications to be effective not only in patients with primary impotence, but also in those with other vascular system disorders. It is worth to note that previous studies proved the effectiveness of Levitra in patients with high blood pressure and diabetes. And now we have the positive results of Levitra effectiveness in treating ED patients with dyslipidemia. About the study The effectiveness of Levitra in treating men with dyslipidemia was checked during the double-blind, placebo controlled study, conducted for the first time. In total 395 men (18 – 64 years old) with both erectile dysfunction and dyslipidemia participated in this study. The scientists used SEP2 score in order to measure rates of penetrations in study participants, and SEP3 score to measure erection maintenance. International Index of Erectile Function was also used to evaluate the quality of erection in patients, who participated in this study. The results of the mentioned study showed that those men, who were treated with Levitra, had higher rates of penetration success (79.1 %) and better erection maintenance (66.7 %) in comparison to those study participants, who were treated with placebo (51.9 % and 33.8 % respectively). The study also proved safety profile of Levitra: in general the medication was well-tolerated. Only 5 % of study participants reported the adverse reactions, the most common of which were headache and upper respiratory tract infections. About Erectile Dysfunction Erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, which means the consistent or recurrent inability of a man to attain and/or maintain a penile erection sufficient for sexual performance. ED can be a total inability to achieve an erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. For the time being, erectile dysfunction can be successfully treated with the PDE-5 inhibitors. There are three medications of this class approved in the USA – Levitra, Viagra and Cialis. About Dyslipidemia Dyslipidemia is a common name for a group of health disorders, associated with changes in blood fats levels. Mostly, dyslipidemia means high levels of LDL “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides in blood. The causes of dyslipidemia may be either of genetic origin or it may be caused by improper eating and lifestyle habits, as well as certain underlying disorders. In most cased dyslipidemia is treated with the diet changes, exercises and specially-designed medications, which can lower the blood levels of cholesterol or triglycerides.
