November 13, 2006 - European Urology –

The recent study supported by the producers of Levitra - Bayer HealthCare Corporation and GlaxoSmithKline - demonstrated the extended period of efficiency of the popular impotence drug. The study proved the suggestion of the scientists, showing that Levitra remains effective in helping men ensure penis erection in up to 8 hours after the drug administration.

It is known that about 150 million men worldwide suffer from erectile dysfunction. For the time being there are three medications to treat the diseases: Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. Though most of the doctors recommend taking any of these medications in 30 minutes prior to the sexual intercourse, for the majority of men it is quite difficult to predict the exact timing of sex.

Several researches, conducted earlier, showed that up to 70% of men could not predict the sexual activity >30min in advance. For most of the couples the time of sexual activity remains flexible and unplanned. That is why it is important for the ED oral medications to offer its consumers rather wide time frame of staying effective. Till now only Cialis was clinically proved to work for as long as 36 hours. The latest international, randomized and placebo-controlled study showed that Levitra has the feature of extended period of action too.

In total 383 patients with erectile dysfunction from the 31 centers in the United States, Germany, Canada, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Greece, South Korea, Mexico, Sweden, Singapore and Turkey were selected to participate in the study. During the 10 weeks period of the study the participants were treated either with vardenafil (Levitra) or placebo. The dosing of Levitra varied from 10 mg. as the starting dose to 5 or 20mg, based on the response and tolerability of the medication during the treatment period.

The participants of the study were instructed to take study medication 8 hours before attempting sexual intercourse. During the study patients could take no more than one pill per day. The time of taking the medication and the time of sexual activity was recorded in the diaries. The patients also had to answer the questions about erection quality and whether each of their attempts to have sex was successful or not.

After analyzing data of the study, the scientists came to the conclusion that the efficacy of vardenafil (Levitra) extends up to 8 hours after taking the medication. Along with the rapid onset of action - 10 minutes postdose, which was demonstrated in the previous studies, the results of the current investigation creates rather alluring profile for the potential consumers of the medication. With Levitra one can be ready to have sexual intercourse in as quickly as 10 minutes. Furthermore, the extended period of action allows couples choose the most suitable and comfortable timing for sexual activity within 8 hours after taking the pill. Nick
