Levitra and Hypertension Medications

University of Muenster March 25, 2006

Levitra can be used to treat male erectile dysfunction safely and effectively in patients, receiving medications against high blood pressure. The results of the recent study, headed by Dr. Hermann van Ahlen from the University of Muenster, Germany, showed that patients, treated simultaneously with Levitra and one or more anti-hypertensive drugs, experienced 83% improvement of their sexual function.

It is known that high blood pressure is one of the most widely spread cardiovascular diseases in the world. Only in the USA it affects about 30 million men. Hypertension may lead to many serious health disorders and dangerous conditions in human organism. Impotence or male erectile dysfunction (ED) is among the diseases, considered to be associated with hypertension.

Moreover, many medications to lower blood pressure, such as beta-blockers and diuretics, may cause erectile dysfunction as a side effect of the treatment. All the above mentioned facts raised many question among the physicians on the preferred way to treat hypertension without causing impotence in male patients.

The study, conducted in 98 primary care sites in Germany, gave the answer for that question. 354 patients, suffering from erectile dysfunction and hypertension, participated in the study. All the men received the treatment against hypertension and Levitra as the medication to improve their sexual performance.

The main goal of the researchers was to evaluate the safety and efficiency of Levitra usage in patients, treated with anti-hypertension medications.

The major conclusions, made by doctors after studying the results of the survey, are the following:

1) Levitra is well-tolerated by humans when taken concomitantly with anti-hypertensive medication; 2) safety of Levitra is not changed significantly when different types of anti-hypertensive drugs are used; 3) Levitra ensures 83% success rate in patients’ ability to achieve penis erection, sufficient to have sexual intercourse; 4) different types of medications to lower blood pressure, such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers or diuretics, do not change the success rate significantly; 5) treatment of patients with Levitra does not cause any changes in their heart rate or blood pressure showings.

To make a conclusion of the study results and show its importance for doctors and patients, the words of Dr. Matthew Rosenberg, medical director at Mid-Michigan Health Centers, can be used: “...male patients are often concerned about taking anti-hypertensive drugs for fear of the potential sexual side effects. This study gives me support to tell patients that I can treat hypertension and also prescribe an effective medication to treat ED. The fact that Levitra improved erectile dysfunction in patients taking multiple anti-hypertensive medications is a testimony to its efficacy.”
