Is Viagra a Real Panacea for Many Diseases?- September 26, 2005 - According to headlines, appearing periodically in world news-lines, Viagra can fully prove its nick-name “magic blue pill”, restoring not only the male penis performance, but also the normal functioning of heart and lungs. Due to rather long history of Viagra, which started in 1998 with FDA approval of this medication as the first oral pill to treat Erectile Dysfunction, a great number of medical studies have been conducted on Viagra and its influence on human organism. Resent researches reveal new really impressive facts about Viagra. So, a group of researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University announced in April 2005 the results of their study of Viagra’s influence on heart muscle, damaged during chemotherapeutic treating of breast cancer, leukemia and sarcomas. It is informed that specific drug doxorubicin (DOX), which is effective agent to kill cancer cells, leads to death of cells in heart muscle too. As a result, a patient may experience serious heart problems, like cardiomyopathy or heart failure during or after DOX treatment. Scientists found out that administration of Viagra prior to each chemotherapeutic treatment decreases significantly the harmful influence of DOX on human heart. It looks like Viagra protects heart muscle on the cellular level. That is why scientists from Virginia University consider it possible to use Viagra as a part of chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer. The other news came from University of Geissen in Germany, where scientists tested Viagra’s influence on people with pulmonary hypertension. This disease targets about 100 000 people in the USA and Europe and is based on the lack of oxygen in the lungs, when blood vessels get constricted; therefore it is getting too hard for a heart to pump the blood through them. Scientists modeled the same situation in mountaineers, who climbed Everest, the highest Earth point. High altitude also causes the hypertension in heart and lungs. Doctors gave Viagra pills to one team of mountaineers and monitored their organisms before climbing and at the top of Everest. As a result, study showed that Viagra reduces high blood pressure in people and improves the lung blood vessels performance. Scientists say that Viagra reduces the chances of people to develop pulmonary hypertension due to its main principle of acting – improving the blood flow in the blood vessels, which is the fundamental process not only for penis, but for all other organs in human body. Obviously, Viagra has impressive prospects in future, treating not only impotence but other human diseases as well.
