The Conference “PDE-Inhibition and HIV Risk: Current Concepts and Controversies”

The conference “PDE-Inhibition and HIV Risk: Current Concepts and Controversies” will take place on September 26-27, 2005 in Potomac, USA. The initiator and main organizer of the said conference is Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Besides several other medical institutions, as The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, The National Institute of Mental Health, The National Institute of Drug Abuse and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will participate in this conference.

PDE-5 or Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors are highly effective and widely spread pills for treating the erectile dysfunction in men. There are three FDA-approved drugs in this group: sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil, commonly known to people as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. At the time being PDE-5 inhibitors are used by approximately 20-25 million of men around the world to restore their sexual functionality. This fact and also the increased number of reports about the use of these drugs by men of high risk sexual activity, what can potentially lead to the spreading of HIV infection (human immunodeficiency virus), created the preconditions for such conference. The main goal of the meeting is to review and study all the information, concerning the use of PDE-5 inhibitors and their potential influence on HIV transition and spreading process. The conference will focus on three major topics:

1) PDE-5 use and sexual behavior among at-risk populations. Here the potential impact of the PDE-5 inhibition on physical and mental health of people as well as on spreading the HIV infection among people with high-risk sexual behavior will be studied;

2) PDE-5 use in combination with drugs of abuse. The increased number of cases when Viagra and analog pills are taken in combination with drugs of abuse, like methamphetamines, will be the key point of discussion in this section of the conference;

3) Risks and benefits of PDE-5 treatment in at-risk populations. The goal of this section is to develop the medical guidelines on treating the erectile dysfunction in men with HIV and AIDS.

Finally, the conference will address all possible legal, ethic and social aspects of PDE-5 inhibitors usage by HIV-positive or high-risk people.
