Cialis Improves Erectile Function in Men with SCI
September 10, 2007 - JAMA and Archives Journals – Tadalafil (generic name of Cialis) can significantly improve the erectile function in men with spinal cord injury (SCI) showed the recent study, funded by Lilly ICOS LLC and conducted in the European Union. The group of researchers from France and Spain initiated the study to determine the efficacy and safety of tadalafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, caused by spinal cord injury. 197 men (38 years old on average) participated in this randomized, double-blind study. After the initial 4-week run-in period, 142 men received tadalafil 10 mg to be taken on demand prior to the planned sexual activity, and 44 men were given placebo pills to compare the results with and without tadalafil treatment. This phase of a trial lasted for 12 weeks. At week 4 and 8 the patients were examined by doctors and the dose of tadalafil was increased to 20 mg for those patients, who did not respond for smaller dose of medication. The level of erectile dysfunction in men, participated in the study, was assessed throughout the whole study with the help of InternationalIndex of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire, where the score below 25 indicates erectile dysfunction. At the beginning of the study the participant’s average score of IIEF was 13.4, indicating moderate or even severe erectile dysfunction. After 12 weeks of treatment, those men, who received tadalafil improved their IEFF score up to 22.6, which indicates mild erectile dysfunction, while the score of those men, who received placebo, remained practically unchanged (13.6). Besides, the researchers saw that those men with SCI, who were treated with tadalafil, had more successful penetration attempts as well as more successful intercourses. The received results mean that tadalafil or Cialis as the brand medication can help men with erectile dysfunction caused by spinal cord injury to attain necessary penis erection and maintain it as long as it is necessary for successful sexual act. The study also demonstrated good tolerability of the medication, when used by men with SCI. Headache and urinary tract infections were the most common side-effects, associated with the use of tadalafil. By the way, people from the placebo group also experienced the same adverse reactions: for example, 4.5 % of men on placebo complained of headache vs. 8.5 % of men on tadalfil, and 6.8 % vs. 7.7 % respectively experienced urinary tract infection. The finding of the above described study is important, because nowadays between 10.4 and 83 individuals per million worldwide experience spinal cord injuries every year according to the statistics. About 75% of those with SCI have erectile dysfunction, because injuries of the spinal cord are often accompanied with the injuries of nerves, participating in the transmission of signals between central nervous system and male reproductive organs. The results of the trial proved efficacy and safety of tadalafil as the main ingredient of Cialis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men with SCI.
