Cialis for Once Daily Use Is Approved

January 8, 2008

-         Eli Lilly and Company –

Eli Lilly and Company, the manufacturer of Cialis - one of three medications available today to treat erectile dysfunction in men, announced about the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of Cialis tablets for once daily use on the territory of the United States of America. The official press-release was published by Eli Lilly on January 8, 2008.

The company reported that one tablet of Cialis (either 2.5 mg or 5.0 mg strength) can now be taken once per day on a daily basis to treat erectile dysfunction. Following such treatment regimen, patients with erectile dysfunction can attempt sexual activity any time between doses. Earlier Cialis, just like other anti-impotence medications Viagra and Levitra, was approved only to be used on as-needed basis (patients were to take a pill of medicine prior to the expected sexual activity).

Cialis once daily doses are expected to be the most appropriate for those men, who anticipate more frequent sexual activity, for example, twice a week. People, who experience sexual activity occasionally, are recommended to use previously approved doses of Cialis.

"We strive to provide patients with solutions that fit their needs and Cialis for once daily use delivers on this promise," said Shawn Heffern, Cialis U.S. Director of Brand Marketing at Lilly. "Now, patients have two options - some may prefer the up to 36 hours of efficacy provided by Cialis for use as needed while others may want the unique benefit provided by this daily dosing option."

It will not be out of place to mention that Cialis was the first medication of its class that demonstrated the longest period of action – up to 36 hours. Now, when the once daily doses of Cialis are available in the USA, the medication provides a new option for men, looking for a dosing option that can be taken without regard to timing of sexual activity.

Regarding the pricing of the new dose of Cialis, the company reported that the cost of weekly supply of once daily doses of Cialis will be somewhere equal to the cost of two or three tablets of regular Cialis taken as needed during one week.

The FDA approval of Cialis once daily was based on the positive results of three randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. Men with erectile dysfunction who participated in these clinical studies and took tadalafil 2.5 mg and 5 mg once daily without regard to their timing of sexual activity reported improvements in their erectile function in comparison to those patients, who received placebo pills.

The company also reported in its press-release that the newly-approved doses of Cialis are generally well-tolerated by patients. The most common side effects associated with taking Cialis on a daily basis were mild or moderate and included headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, nasal congestion, flushing and pain in limb.
