Cialis Helps People with Spinal Cord Injury- ICOS Corporation - April 6, 2006 Cialis (tadalafil) helps 84.6 percent of people with erectile dysfunction (ED) secondary to traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) improve their erection and sexual performance, as the ICOS Corporation says in its most recent press-release. Erectile dysfunction is caused by the physical factors in the majority of cases (about 80 – 90%), such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, injury of spinal cord and some other diseases. About 10 % of ED cases are explained by psychological reasons, for example anxiety, depression etc. Very often, physical and psychological factors can both contribute to the development of the erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction, resulting from the two above mentioned factors, is very common among the people with the injured spinal cord. There are up to 400 000 individuals with SCI only in the USA and many of them suffer from moderate or severe erectile dysfunction. According to the recent clinical study, Cialis may become an efficient and trusted medication to treat erectile dysfunction in SCI patients. The study was performed in four European countries (France, Germany, Italy and Spain), where 186 patients with injured spinal cords were treated with Cialis for 12 weeks. To evaluate the efficiency of Cialis, scientists asked the participants to answer specific questions about their sexual performance before and after Cialis treatment. Doctors focused their attention on the assessment of patients’ ability to penetrate their partners and to have successful sexual intercourse. The results of the study are rather promising: Cialis treatment helped people to penetrate their partner in 75.4 % of attempts. Before the treatment, those people could penetrate only in 43.6 % of attempts. Cialis helped to increase the rate of successful intercourses from 10.8 % at the baseline up to 47.6% after the treatment course. In general treating SCI patients with Cialis ensured improvement of their erectile function from 13.5 to 22.6 points according to the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction score. Such improvement is considered to be clinically meaningful change, proving the efficacy of Cialis as the oral pill to treat erectile dysfunction. "Treating men for ED caused by a spinal cord injury is a complicated task. These results are encouraging for men who suffer from spinal cord injury," said Francois Giuliano, MD and PhD from Medical University of Paris West, France. "Tadalafil was not only effective in improving erections, it enabled more than half the men receiving tadalafil in the trial to achieve a normal erectile function score." Spinal cord injury is surely a very serious disease with serious health consequences. Cialis may be used here to treat one of such consequences – erectile dysfunction, and thus return the SCI patient their reproductive performance. Nick
